The enchanting phenomenon, reminiscent of cherry blossoms but unique to Bengaluru, is courtesy of the vibrant Tabebuia avellanedae and Tabebuia rosea trees which are native to South America.

These pink trumpet trees found their way to Bengaluru through the hands of British colonists with a penchant for ornamental exotic species. The roots of this visual spectacle trace back to the efforts of horticulturists commissioned to enhance Bengaluru’s green cover during the British era.

Kavya Chandra, a garden and plant expert, explained that the trees were planted here by the horticulturists who were commissioned to enhance the green cover in Bengaluru.

She further added that it is a combination of the efforts of the earlier rulers of Bengaluru including the British who allowed the flowers to bloom.

The legacy of these trees endured beyond colonial rule. In the late 19th century, horticultural pioneers like James Cameron and Gustav Krumbiegel imported trees from various territories, creating a diverse botanical landscape. As British rule waned, SG Neginhal, an Indian forest official and horticulturist, solidified the presence of Tabebuia trees in the 1980s by planting over 15 lakh trees across the city.

Come December, the city undergoes a transformation as the Tabebuia trees shed leaves, giving way to delicate pink trumpet-shaped flowers.

Known as “trumpet trees,” they paint Bengaluru in shades of pink, creating a visual spectacle that has become a signature feature of the city’s winter landscape.

In recent years, Bengaluru residents have embraced this annual pink transformation with zeal, drawing parallels to the Japanese cherry blossom festival, known as Hanami.

Social media platforms are flooded with envy-inducing images of Cubbon Park, State Central Library, Lal Bagh, Sadashivanagar, and Koramangala, where the blossoming trees weave a stunning tapestry against the city’s green backdrop.

The city, often dubbed the ‘Garden City,’ has long been celebrated for its lush greenery. The pink blossoms seamlessly blend with the verdant landscape, enhancing Bengaluru’s aesthetic appeal.

As the city revels in its pink phase until March, the annual transformation continues to captivate residents and visitors alike, offering a visual treat that transcends the ordinary hustle and bustle of urban life.
