
Sitamarhi district in Bihar is witnessing a worrying increase in HIV cases. Health officials report that more than 7,400 people in the district are currently living with HIV, including over 400 children. Many of these children were infected at birth through mother-to-child transmission.
Records from the local treatment centre show that around 3,544 women and 2,733 men have tested positive. Doctors say 40 to 60 new cases are being added every month. Many patients visit the district hospital for regular medication, counselling, and testing, while some travel to nearby districts for continued treatment.
Health workers link the rising numbers to low awareness, unsafe practices, and the stigma surrounding HIV. Due to fear and shame, many avoid testing until their health becomes critical. Migration for work is also considered a factor, as several workers miss timely health check ups.
The health department is now organising awareness drives, village meetings, and free testing camps. Officials say early detection, safe behaviour, and proper treatment can prevent further spread. They urge families not to hide symptoms and to seek medical help without hesitation.
