Spotify is one of the biggest music streaming services in the world given fans can listen to songs without paying with ads in between. So, Spotify charts are considered more relevant than the ones that list artists only in a particular demography.
Even though it has a dedicated user base in India, the only artist in the top 10 list is Arijit Singh with 100 million followers on the app. He became the first and only Indian to reach the feat and was placed in second place until the worldwide phenomenon and the face of American music at the moment, Taylor Swift moved past him to second place with 101 million followers. Ed Sheeran tops the list with over 113 million followers.
The point to focus on here is that Arijit sings in Hindi mostly, so his listeners and followers belong to India and the subcontinent. Swift, on the other hand, sings in English and has a worldwide following, with a massive fanbase in India as well.
Arijit has been the biggest star of the Hindi music industry for over a decade now and he does not seem to stop any time soon. We may see him hitting the topmost position on Spotify’s Top 10 most followed artists if he continues to sing the way he does.
