The recent bomb blasts in Delhi have shaken the nation. As security agencies investigate, they are trying to confirm if the remains found in the i20 car belong to Dr Umar Mohammed Nabi. But what’s shocking is Telegram’s alleged link to the case.
Investigators discovered that Dr Umar Nabi was part of a radical doctors’ group on the Telegram App and maintained ties with the Pakistan-based terrorist group Jaish-e-Mohammad. This connection has raised fresh alarm over how terrorists use the platform to communicate.
On Monday, eight people were arrested in Jammu & Kashmir for their association with banned outfits Jashn-E-Mohammad and Ansar Gajwat Ul Hind. Among them were doctors Adil Ahmed, Shaheena, and Muzammal Shakeel. Reports say Syed, arrested earlier by Gujarat ATS, also received information from Pakistan via Telegram. Authorities suspect Dr Umar used the same app for coordination.
For years, people have demanded a ban on Telegram due to serious issues like obscene content, child pornography, human trafficking, and honey trap videos. Investigations in the past also revealed that terrorist groups used the app for planning attacks. The app’s CEO, Pavel France, was even arrested earlier over similar accusations.
Many nations now view Telegram as a security threat, and India may soon join the list. With Dr Umar’s alleged use of the app now under scrutiny, public pressure to ban Telegram in India is growing stronger.
Security agencies believe Dr Umar’s act wasn’t pre-planned, though explosives were found with him. Yet, the fear remains what if the attack had been carefully organised? The demand for tougher action against terror networks is louder than ever.
