The IPL’s Impact Player rule has faced backlash from several cricketers, and Ajinkya Rahane has now called for its removal.
The former India batter believes the rule is hurting the development of all rounders in Indian cricket and giving teams too much freedom to add an extra batter or bowler during a match.
According to report’s, Ajinkya Rahane said he saw little use for the rule and recalled that several captains had opposed it during a previous IPL captains’ meeting.
The rule is currently set to remain in place until 2027, although its future beyond that period remains uncertain.
Ajinkya Rahane’s biggest concern is the lack of opportunities for all rounders. With teams able to bring in an Impact Player depending on the match situation, franchises can choose an extra specialist batter or bowler instead of relying on players who can contribute in both departments.
Ajinkya Rahane believes this is making it harder to develop all rounders who can play an important role for India.
India have already faced questions about their options in the pace bowling all rounder department.
Hardik Pandya remains an important player in that role, while Shivam Dube and Nitish Kumar Reddy offer other options. Despite, finding more players who can contribute with both bat and ball remains a challenge.
Ajinkya Rahane also pointed out how teams can recover from a poor batting position with the extra batter available through the rule.
The debate now is whether the Impact Player rule is worth keeping if it affects all rounder development and the balance between bat and ball.
Should the IPL scrap the rule and give all rounders a bigger role, or is the extra tactical option good for the tournament?
