The Impact Player rule is back in focus ahead of the next IPL season. The BCCI has asked all IPL franchises to share their feedback on the rule, with August 31 set as the deadline.
The board is also seeking feedback on umpiring, playing conditions, practice sessions and other cricket operations.
But the Impact Player rule remains the biggest talking point. The rule has been part of the IPL since 2023 and has changed how teams build their playing XI.
A franchise can use an extra specialist batter or bowler during the match, giving teams more options than they had under the traditional XI system.
Why is the BCCI reviewing the Impact Player rule? The interesting part is that the rule was expected to continue.
The BCCI had indicated during the previous captains meeting that the Impact Player rule would remain in place. Now, after the 2026 season, the board has specifically asked franchises for their views.
So, has the debate around the rule finally reached the BCCI? Several big names have already questioned it. Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel and Shubman Gill have all spoken against the rule.
One of the biggest concerns is the effect on all rounders. With an Impact Player available, teams do not always need a player who can contribute with both bat and ball. A specialist batter can be used for batting and replaced by a bowler later in the game.
That gives teams more freedom, but does it reduce the value of genuine all rounders?
Has the rule changed the IPL? The Impact Player rule has also played a role in the high scoring nature of recent IPL seasons.
Teams can bat deeper and take more risks because they have another player available. But bowlers have also faced greater pressure, while matches can become heavily tilted towards batting.
That raises another question has the Impact Player rule improved the IPL, or has it taken something away from the balance between bat and ball?
The BCCI has not announced any decision yet. For now, the franchises have been asked to give their feedback.
What happens after that could decide whether the Impact Player remains part of the IPL or finally faces a major change.
