Ajinkya Rahane has finally announced his retirement from international cricket and all formats.
The former India captain ended his playing career after waiting years for another opportunity that never came.
Rahane’s biggest achievement came during the 2020 21 Border Gavaskar Trophy.
After India’s historic 36 all out in Adelaide and Virat Kohli’s departure, Rahane took charge of an injury hit team and led India to a famous 2-1 series win in Australia. His century at the MCG completely changed the series.
Despite that success, Rahane gradually lost his place in the Test team. He made a comeback for the 2023 World Test Championship Final and finished as India’s highest run scorer in the match, but it wasn’t enough to cement his place.
The selectors once again moved on from the veteran batter.
Rahane continued performing in domestic cricket and kept pushing for another chance.
Despite, with India focusing on younger players, the comeback never happened. The veteran finally decided to call time on his career.
Rahane finishes with more than 5,000 Test runs and will always be remembered as the captain who delivered one of India’s greatest overseas Test series wins. But one question still remains did Team India move on from Rahane too early?
