Ashwin has sparked debate again. The former India spinner believes Yashasvi Jaiswal should return to the T20I squad well before the 2026 T20 World Cup. Jaiswal was left out of the Asia Cup 2025 where Shubman Gill partnered Abhishek Sharma at the top.
Ashwin calls for Jaiswal’s return
The plan worked only in parts. Abhishek dominated with 314 runs at a strike rate of 200, finishing as the top scorer. Gill struggled for rhythm and managed only 127 runs at 21.16. Ashwin feels pairing Jaiswal with Abhishek is the best move, even with two left handers.
Selection puzzles highlighted
On his YouTube channel, Ashwin shared his views on India’s combinations. He said Abhishek Sharma is a certain pick. Arshdeep Singh must play, even at the cost of batting depth. He wants Kuldeep Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy as the spin duo. Shivam Dube impressed in the final against Pakistan but needs better role clarity.
Praise and caution
Ashwin credited Dube for contributing with bat and ball in the final. But he cautioned that India cannot bench Arshdeep simply to stretch batting until No.8. He insisted balance comes from trust in specialists, not just longer batting orders.
Mixed fan reactions
His comments have triggered heated online debate. Supporters praised his eye for talent and backed Jaiswal’s inclusion for his ability against spin. Some even suggested Ashwin should take up a selector or strategist role. Critics, however, dismissed his views as impractical.
Next series test
India now gear up for a white ball tour of Australia from October 19 with three ODIs and five T20Is. This series will help the management assess options like Jaiswal and Arshdeep before finalising the core group for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
