The Board of Control for Cricket in India has clarified the recent salary cut involving Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. We should note that the decision follows a change in contract structure, not performance. The board has removed the A plus central contract category.
The BCCI stated that the move is not linked to form, popularity, or past achievements. It applies strictly to eligibility rules that govern central contracts. Senior players now receive contracts based on current format availability.
BCCI salary cut clarification
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia explained that the A plus category was designed only for players active across all three formats. With senior players stepping away from some formats, the category no longer serves its purpose.
He said the board had no flexibility under existing rules. A player active in only one format cannot remain in the A plus bracket. This made the decision unavoidable.
Kohli Rohit contract downgrade explained
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have retired from Tests and T20Is and now play only ODIs. Ravindra Jadeja has also stepped away from T20Is.
This change in availability directly affected their contract status. Their annual retainer will drop from the earlier Rs 7 crore after the A plus category is removed.
Bumrah remains only A plus fit player
Jasprit Bumrah remains the only senior player active across formats. This keeps him aligned with the original A plus criteria. The BCCI expects him to retain his salary.
The board stressed that this is not a demotion. It reflects a policy shift that links contracts to present-day involvement. Indian cricket now places clear value on format availability over legacy.
