Former India cricketer Manoj Tiwary has raised fresh questions in the ODI captain debate. He believes you need an experienced leader and wants the BCCI to bring back Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain. He feels the current decision has hurt results.
Shubman Gill took charge as India’s ODI captain in October 2025. Since then, results have gone against the team. India have lost both ODI series played under his leadership so far, which has intensified the ODI captain debate.
ODI captain debate after back to back losses
Gill’s first ODI series as captain came in Australia. India lost that series. He then led the team against New Zealand at home, where India lost two matches in a row and the series as well.
The New Zealand defeat marked India’s first ever home ODI series loss against them. This result increased pressure on Gill’s leadership. The ODI captain debate has grown stronger after these performances.
Manoj Tiwary backs Rohit Sharma
Manoj Tiwary said the BCCI still has time to correct the decision. He urged the board to focus only on preparations for the 2027 World Cup. According to him, leadership clarity matters more than experimentation at this stage.
He added that the New Zealand series could have ended differently under Rohit Sharma. He questioned why Rohit was removed when the team looked settled and confident under his captaincy.
BCCI faces key ODI captain decision
Tiwary said Rohit Sharma remains a better ODI captain than Gill due to experience and proven results. While he accepted that India can win tournaments under Gill, he believes World Cup success looks more likely with Rohit.
With consecutive ODI series losses and rising concerns, the BCCI now faces a clear choice. The board must decide whether to continue with Gill or bring back Rohit Sharma before the 2027 World Cup.
