Rohit vs Gambhir? Coach Reveals What Really Matters

Gautam Gambhir has opened up about his relationship with Rohit Sharma ahead of India’s three match ODI series against West Indies, starting September 27.

Rohit Sharma is no longer India’s ODI captain, with Shubman Gill leading the side in the format.

However, Rohit remains an important senior player as India prepare for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Rohit’s future in ODI cricket has been discussed heavily over the last few months. Reports during the England series in July had suggested that the series could be his last, but the BCCI denied those reports.

Rohit has now been included in India’s ODI squad for the West Indies series alongside Virat Kohli.

Gautam Gambhir was asked about the difference between working with a senior player who had previously been captain and working with a new captain like Gill.

Gambhir explained that their relationship goes back to the time when Rohit first entered the Indian team and Gambhir was still a senior player. Both already understood how the other thinks.

He also made it clear that a coach and captain can have different opinions, but the final decision should always be based on what is best for the team.

“I know his thinking, he knows my thinking,” Gambhir said while explaining his equation with Rohit.

Gambhir also backed Shubman Gill ahead of the West Indies series. Gill has had a difficult start as India’s ODI captain, but Gambhir believes he has done many things right so far.

The India coach also pointed out that Gill is fortunate to have senior players like Rohit and Kohli around him in the ODI setup.

With the 2027 World Cup less than a year away, their experience will be part of India’s plans as Gill continues to lead the team.

For Gambhir, though, the equation with Rohit is different. Their relationship started when both were players, long before Gambhir became India’s head coach.
