IPL Fans Shocked: Tickets Soar, Movies Relieved!

IPL tickets costlier after GST hike

If you are an IPL fan, get ready to spend more. The GST Council has raised taxes on tickets for sporting events, including India’s most popular cricket league. This means watching your favourite matches will now cost significantly more.

IPL Ticket Prices Go Up

Tickets for IPL and other major sporting events will now attract 40% GST with input tax credit (ITC), compared to the earlier 28%. For fans who fill stadiums in lakhs every season, this is a steep increase.

Relief for Movie-Goers

Cinema tickets priced up to ₹100 will now fall under a 5% GST slab with ITC, down from 12%. This reduction offers much-needed relief for movie-goers. However, tickets priced above ₹100 remain unchanged at 18%.

MAI’s Demand Rejected

The Multiplex Association of India (MAI) had urged the government to extend the 5% GST slab to tickets up to ₹300. Their argument was that lower taxes would make movies more affordable and boost cinema growth in smaller towns.

Winners and Losers

While the cheapest cinema tickets are now easier on the pocket, sports fans face the opposite situation. Watching the IPL live, once a thrilling outing, now comes with a heavier price tag. The BCCI and organisers continue to earn, but the burden falls on the fans.

Are Fans Paying Too Much?

The IPL, Virat’s fanbase, and stadium crowds generate massive revenue for both the BCCI and the government. Yet, the ticket hike raises questions. Should loyal fans be asked to pay more for the joy of cheering their heroes in person?

Clear Divide in Entertainment Costs

The new GST rules create a sharp contrast. Budget movie tickets have become more affordable, but premium sporting events now pinch the pockets of fans. For cinema lovers, it’s a win. For cricket enthusiasts, the debate on fairness continues.
