India kept their Semi final hopes alive in the T20 World Cup 2026 with a strong 72 run win over Zimbabwe in Chennai, a result that also ended Zimbabwe’s campaign.
The victory has set up a direct qualification match between India and West Indies, while South Africa have already sealed their place in the Semi final.
India came into this match under pressure after their heavy defeat against South Africa had pushed their Net Run Rate into negative.
This win has helped them recover significantly, improving their NRR to around -0.100, while West Indies are still ahead +1.791. South Africa remain comfortably on top with an excellent +2.890.
India produced one of their best T20 World Cup performances. They scored 256/4, their highest total in the tournament’s history.
Abhishek Sharma played an important role at the top with 55 off 30 balls and gave India early momentum. Ishan Kishan added 38 and ensured the scoring rate never dropped in the middle overs.
The finishing was outstanding. Hardik Pandya scored an unbeaten 50 off 23 balls, and Tilak Varma made 44 not out off just 16 balls. Their aggressive batting in the final overs pushed India to a total that was always going to be difficult to chase.
Zimbabwe started well and reached 44 without loss in the powerplay. Brian Bennett played a brilliant innings and remained unbeaten on 97, but India kept picking wickets at regular intervals to stay in control.
Arshdeep Singh was the key bowler with 3 for 24 and broke the important partnerships. Zimbabwe eventually finished on 184/6, falling well short of the target.
The result means India and West Indies now have the same number of points, but West Indies still hold the advantage in Net Run Rate. Because of this, India must win their final Super 8 match against West Indies in Kolkata to qualify.
If West Indies win, they will reach the Semi final. If the match is washed out due to rain, West Indies will still qualify because of their better NRR.
South Africa, with two wins in two matches and the best run rate in the group, have already qualified and will now look to finish at the top.
India have given themselves another chance with this win, but their tournament now depends on one match. The clash against West Indies will decide whether India move forward or are knocked out of the World Cup.
