PCB vs BCCI: No Handshake, No Game?

The India-Pakistan Asia Cup 2025 clash has sparked a major controversy, and this time, it’s not about cricketing performance. The drama centres around the match referee and an unusual incident during the toss.

PCB Questions Referee’s Role at Toss

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has raised serious concerns against match referee Andy Pycroft. According to the PCB, Pycroft violated the ICC Code of Conduct and the Spirit of Cricket.

The controversy began when Pycroft allegedly asked Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha not to shake hands with India’s Suryakumar Yadav before the match.

Was There a Rule Behind the Instruction?

This directive has surprised many. Why would a referee advise against a handshake, which is usually seen as a friendly gesture?

The PCB has demanded Pycroft’s immediate removal. It has even threatened to boycott its next Asia Cup match against the UAE if action isn’t taken.

ACC’s Alleged Involvement Raises Eyebrows

Sources suggest Pycroft may have been acting under instructions from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). The ACC is currently led by Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the chairman of the PCB.

If this is true, it raises questions about neutrality. Should the ACC influence such on-field moments? Should referees not act independently?

BCCI Clarifies on Handshake Protocol

In response, the BCCI has clarified that post-match handshakes are not compulsory. A senior BCCI official stated, “It’s a goodwill gesture. There’s no rule that players must shake hands.”

This puts India on firm ground. Yet, the PCB’s reaction has turned a simple moment into a full-blown controversy.

More Than Just a Match

This incident reveals how minor actions can escalate when India and Pakistan are involved. It’s not just about the game it’s also about pride, politics, and perception.

The ongoing dispute also raises bigger questions about the influence of cricket boards on match officials. Can such gestures impact sportsmanship on a global stage?

What Happens Next?

All eyes are now on the ICC and ACC. Will Pycroft be removed? Will the PCB follow through with the boycott? The outcome could impact the rest of the Asia Cup.

For now, the tension continues, both on and off the field.
