30k Cr Empire, 9k Cr Revenue: Is IPL Golden Duck?

BCCI earns ₹9,741 Cr in FY24, IPL alone brings ₹5,761 Cr

BCCI smashes own records, earns ₹9,741.7 crore in 2023-24. And no surprise here, the Indian Premier League (IPL) did all the heavy lifting again.

The IPL alone brought in ₹5,761 crore, that’s almost 60% of the total revenue. That’s more than half the money from just one tournament.

On top of that, the BCCI earned ₹361 crore from non-IPL media rights, so other cricket properties are slowly finding their place too.

Since IPL began in 2007, it has changed the way Indian cricket earns money. What was a gamble is now a goldmine.

Lloyd Mathias, a business strategist, calls it BCCI’s “golden goose”. It’s not just about big names and big crowds anymore, it’s also giving players from Ranji Trophy and other domestic circuits a big platform to shine.

But there’s more to BCCI’s earning story. The Women’s Premier League (WPL) is starting to pick up steam and global media rights are adding value too.

According to experts, the BCCI has nearly ₹30,000 crore in reserves. That kind of money earns about ₹1,000 crore a year in interest alone.

And the growth isn’t stopping anytime soon. Marketing expert Sandeep Goyal believes BCCI’s earnings will rise by 10-12% every year.

With growing sponsorships, packed stadiums and more media deals, the board’s future looks rock solid.

The BCCI’s impact isn’t limited to India either. The International Cricket Council (ICC) depends heavily on the BCCI for funds.

In fact, Ajimon Francis from Brand Finance India even said that “ICC is not driving revenue as it should” which shows just how much the global game relies on India.

This is being noticed. The CEO of Lancashire County Cricket Club recently suggested that the ECB could even offer BCCI a minority stake in The Hundred to bring Indian men’s players on board. That’s how big the BCCI’s pull has become.

Even a hiccup like Operation Sindoor earlier this year didn’t dent the IPL’s performance.

It stayed steady, proving just how strong and stable the league really is.It’s not just about the numbers. It’s about how BCCI with IPL at the centre has created a system that keeps giving year after year.

And if they focus more on other tournaments like Duleep Trophy or CK Nayudu Trophy, the earnings could be even higher.

For now, one thing is clear: IPL is not just cricket. It’s big business. And it’s taking Indian cricket to places no one thought of two decades ago.
