India ended Day 2 of the first Test against Sri Lanka at 460/9 at the Galle International Stadium. Rain again affected play, with the first two sessions almost completely washed out.
Devdutt Padikkal was India’s top scorer, making 167 runs off 230 balls, with 15 fours and one six. KL Rahul scored 82, while Dhruv Jurel added 51.
India resumed their first innings at 288/2 after Day 1. Despite, rain delayed the start and play finally resumed around 2:35 PM IST.
Rishabh Pant and Padikkal were at the crease when play restarted. Pant was dismissed for 39 soon after.
KL Rahul then returned to the crease after retiring hurt with cramps on Day 1. He added more runs but was eventually dismissed for 82.
Padikkal scored 167 runs and added important partnerships during his stay at the crease. Ravindra Jadeja then scored 13 before being dismissed.
Dhruv Jurel and Manav Suthar tried to keep the innings moving. The pair added a half century partnership before Jurel was dismissed for 51.
Suthar scored 24, while Mohammed Siraj made 11. At the end of the day, Kuldeep Yadav and Prasidh Krishna were unbeaten, with India on 460/9.
The Test is important for India’s World Test Championship campaign. India are currently fifth with 52 points and a 48.15 points percentage.
They have played nine matches, winning four, losing four and drawing one. India have nine more Tests remaining in the current WTC cycle.
A strong result in Sri Lanka would give India important points as they look to improve their position in the table.
