Kuldeep Yadav has been India’s star performer in the Asia Cup so far. With two matches, seven wickets, and two Man of the Match awards, the numbers look perfect. But when asked if he is satisfied, Kuldeep’s reply is surprising. “Who told you I’m happy with my bowling?” he says with a smile, proving he is his own toughest critic.
Numbers vs personal standards
His average is 3.57, with an economy rate of 4.05 and a wicket every five balls. Yet, Kuldeep does not call it his best. He admits to making “small mistakes” while reading batsmen in T20 cricket, where even the slightest error can prove costly.
For Kuldeep, success is not about stats but about how the ball feels when leaving his hand and how well he performs against strong hitters.
Facing real tests
He gave an example of Pakistan’s Shaheen Afridi. Known as a fast bowler, Afridi has been hitting powerfully in this Asia Cup. Kuldeep believes such players are the true challenge for a bowler like him.
Missing Tests, gaining growth
Kuldeep also reflected on missing the Test series in England. He felt he could have played “3-4 Tests”. Instead of frustration, he focused on fitness, rhythm, and bowling in the nets, preparing himself for the next opportunity.
Football as motivation
Football kept him motivated during that phase. Kuldeep admired how top clubs manage big squads of 15–20 players where quick communication and teamwork make the difference.
Applying teamwork with spinners
He applies the same idea with India’s spin unit. Axar Patel controls the powerplay, Varun Chakaravarthy supports, and Kuldeep attacks in the middle overs. He feels their clear roles and mutual trust make the group stronger.
Hunger to improve
Kuldeep’s story is not just about wickets but about hunger. Even after two dream performances, he insists he can do better. This mindset of never settling, even at his peak, could become India’s biggest strength as the Asia Cup progresses.
