ODI 2027 WC: Which Teams Miss Out? Who Qualifies Directly?

The ODI World Cup 2027 will have 14 teams, with 10 teams getting direct qualification for the tournament.

South Africa and Zimbabwe have qualified as hosts, while the other eight spots have been decided through the ICC ODI rankings as of September 30, 2026.

India have secured direct qualification along with Australia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, England, New Zealand, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. South Africa and Zimbabwe complete the list of 10 teams that have qualified directly for the World Cup.

Namibia, despite being one of the three hosts, will not get an automatic place because it is not an ICC Full Member. This means they will have to go through the qualification route.

The biggest name missing from the direct qualification list is West Indies. The two time ODI World Cup champions will have to play the 2027 World Cup Qualifier to secure a place in the main tournament.

It will be the third consecutive ODI World Cup where West Indies have to go through the Qualifier.

West Indies and the other teams outside the direct qualification spots will have to compete through the qualification process for the remaining places.

What is the format of ODI World Cup 2027? The 14 team World Cup will have a new format. The teams ranked 12th, 13th and 14th in the qualification standings will first play each other, with only the winner moving into the next stage.

That team will then join the other 11 teams in the next phase. The 12 teams will be divided into two groups of six.

The top three teams from each group, along with the next best team across the two groups, will move into the Super 7 stage.

In the Super 7, all seven teams will play each other once. The top four will qualify for the semi-finals, followed by the final.

The official ODI World Cup 2027 schedule is expected to be announced in Cape Town on October 1, 2026.
