BCCI Chief Selector’s Replacement: Who Is Parthiv Patel?

Ajit Agarkar’s future as India’s chief selector remains a big talking point, with the BCCI now looking at options for the next chairman of the senior selection committee.

Ajit Agarkar took charge of the selection committee in July 2023. His current term is set to end soon, and reports have said that he does not want an extension. However, the BCCI has not officially announced his replacement yet.

BCCI vice president Rajeev Shukla confirmed after the board’s AGM that the office bearers have been authorised to take a call on the future of the senior selection committee.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also said that there are still around 15 days left in Agarkar’s current term and that the board will take a decision at the right time.

Former India wicketkeeper batter Parthiv Patel is one of the leading names to replace Agarkar. Reports have said that he is currently ahead in the race, with former India spinner Pragyan Ojha also being considered for the role.

Parthiv played 25 Tests, 38 ODIs and two T20Is for India. His 25 Test matches would also make him the most experienced member if he joins the selection committee, putting him ahead of the other names being discussed.

Ojha, meanwhile, has also remained involved with Indian cricket after his playing career. He was part of the Indian Cricketers Association and has served on the IPL Governing Council.

Agarkar’s tenure has included India’s 2024 T20 World Cup win, the 2025 Champions Trophy win and the 2026 T20 World Cup triumph. He was also part of the selection process during major changes in India’s white ball teams.

For now, the BCCI is yet to make the final announcement. With Agarkar’s term nearing its end, the next few weeks could decide who takes charge of India’s senior selection committee.
