Ajit Agarkar is attending the BCCI selection committee meeting in New Delhi today, but this could be his final meeting as the chairman of the senior men’s selection committee.
The selectors are meeting to pick India’s squads for the upcoming West Indies white ball series.
Ajit Agarkar‘s current contract runs until October 4, and according to a PTI report, there is still no confirmation from the BCCI about an extension.
Agarkar became India’s chief selector in July 2023 after replacing Chetan Sharma.
Questions over his future increased after Agarkar missed the BCCI review meeting in Mumbai earlier this month.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia later said Agarkar was out of town when the meeting was called at short notice and could not join online because of connectivity issues.
The Rohit Sharma ODI performances has also brought more attention to Agarkar’s role. Reports from India’s England tour claimed that Rohit had been told that the Lord’s ODI could be his final match for India.
Saikia later denied that the BCCI had taken such a decision. A later PTI report said the board’s top officials were unhappy with how the issue was handled, although the BCCI has not linked it officially to Agarkar’s contract.
Today’s meeting also has several selection decisions to make. India will play three ODIs and five T20Is against the West Indies from September 27.
KL Rahul could be considered for the ODI vice captaincy, while Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel are among the wicketkeeping options. Hardik Pandya’s fitness will also be discussed.
Agarkar remains the BCCI chief selector until October 4. But with his contract nearing its end and no extension confirmed yet, could today’s meeting be his last as India’s chief selector?
