2024 Disaster Year: Big Stars Flop, 1000 Cr Loss

Kollywood movies in 2024 were a big letdown, as there was a loss of more than 1,000 crores for the producers this year, according to theatre owners and distributors.

According to reports from distributors and theatre owners, 241 movies were released in theatres this year in Kollywood, of which only 18 were said to be hits at the box office.

Producers spent over 3,000 crores to produce these 241 movies, and the loss is estimated to be around 1,000 crores for the producers and distributors.

The reason for the loss this year was that Kollywood’s big heroes’ movies didn’t perform well at the Tamil Nadu box office. Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2, Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan, and Suriya’s Kanguva were major disasters.

Additionally, distributors claimed that this year was better for medium-budget movies in Kollywood, as some of them performed better at the box office than the big-league actors’ movies.

Let us hope 2025 will be a profitable year for Kollywood, with big-league actors’ movies such as Rajinikanth’s Coolie, Vijay’s 69th movie, Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life, and Suriya’s Retro and his 45th movie becoming a blockbuster success.
