In recent times Indian cinema has been experimenting with new genres and filmmakers and actors are willing to take risks.
Superhero genre while popular in Hollywood has seen only a few attempts in India. Now with Aamir Khan and Lokesh Kanagaraj coming together there is a lot of curiosity about how this genre will shape up in Indian context.
The collaboration is interesting given Lokesh Kanagaraj’s background in action films and Aamir Khan’s reputation of choosing unconventional scripts.
The film is reportedly a reworked version of the long discussed “Irumbu Kai Mayavi” which was initially planned with Suriya but was delayed due to budget and experience limitations.
Bringing Aamir Khan on board seems to be a fresh direction and possibly a bigger scale for the project. The fact that the film will start only after Kanagaraj completes “Kaithi 2” suggests a careful and calculated approach rather than a rushed one.
Aamir Khan’s cameo in “Coolie” being linked to this superhero film hints at a shared universe which could be exciting for Indian audiences. While expectations are high it remains to be seen how well they balance spectacle with substance.
If done well this could be a new benchmark for Indian superhero films.
