Back-to-Back Disasters: Can Dhanush Rescue BO?

Since the start of this year, Kollywood has seen very few big releases. Apart from Sivakarthikeyan’s Parasakthi, most major films have stayed away from theatres. Medium-budget films like Thalaivar Thambi Thalaimayil, With Love, and Thaai Kizhavi have supported exhibitors in Tamil Nadu.

Despite being completed months ago, Dhanush’s Kara and Suriya’s Karuppu were delayed. The makers planned releases after the Tamil Nadu state elections. Now, Kara is set for April 30, while Karuppu is expected to arrive in theatres on May 15.

In the meantime, trade circles expected medium-budget films to continue their strong run. Films like Pradeep Ranganathan’s LIK and Arya’s Mr X were seen as promising releases. Many believed these films would sustain theatre business before big films returned.

However, the response has not matched expectations. After LIK, even Mr X has failed to impress audiences. Both films are struggling at the box office despite the summer holiday advantage and have received largely negative feedback from viewers.

Due to these setbacks, distributors and theatre owners are now depending on Dhanush’s Kara. The film has created strong buzz with positive inside reports. Many expect it to perform well and revive the current dull phase at the Tamil Nadu box office.

If Kara succeeds, it could bring momentum back to Kollywood. Several big films are lined up in the coming months. Suriya’s Karuppu is planned for May, while Jailer 2 is expected in June and Suriya’s Vishwanath & Sons may release in July.

The industry is now closely watching Kara’s performance. Its success could change the current trend and boost confidence among trade circles. All eyes are on its April 30 release to see if it can revive the market.
