1000-cr Loss: Suriya, Rajini, Kamal Responsible?

Kollywood in 2024 wasn’t up to expectations, as only one or two movies became surprise blockbusters. Overall, it was one of the worst years for Tamil cinema, say distributors and theatre owners submitting a report.

According to the report, Tamil cinema producers and financiers faced a terrible loss last year; the estimated loss was up to 1000 crores, with 223 movies ending up as flop ventures in Kollywood.

Additionally, it is also noted that major losses for the producers and financiers were caused by the superstars of Kollywood, while medium-budget movies turned out to be profitable ventures.

Last year, Kamal Haasan’s Indian 2, Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan, and Suriya’s Kanguva had huge expectations among the audience, but after release, they did not meet expectations and ended up as major disasters.

Among the top stars, Vijay was the only savior last year, as his movie The Greatest Of All Time grossed around 440 crores worldwide, with approximately 220 crores collected in Tamil Nadu alone.

It seems that 2024 was a major setback for Kollywood in terms of business due to the underperformance of the big stars’ movies.

Now, Tamil cinema audiences, distributors, and financiers are hopeful that star actors will make a massive comeback this year, as all the top actors of Kollywood have releases scheduled for this year.
