Rajinikanth’s highly anticipated movie Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, hit theatres on August 14 and has been receiving mixed reactions from both audiences and critics. Despite massive expectations, the film has left many viewers disappointed.
Coolie carried huge hype since its announcement. However, after its release, several moviegoers have described it as Lokesh Kanagaraj’s weakest work. The response has triggered wide discussions across social media platforms.
Lokesh Kanagaraj’s last film before Coolie was Vijay’s Leo, which released in 2023. That film also carried high expectations but failed to impress audiences, despite strong box office collections. It was widely termed as a below-average outing.
With two consecutive disappointing films in Leo and Coolie, several netizens have begun labelling Lokesh Kanagaraj as an overrated director. Critics argue that his brand value has dropped significantly after these back-to-back setbacks.
Industry trackers note that Lokesh Kanagaraj now faces huge pressure to deliver with Kaithi 2, part of the Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU). They believe the average response to Leo and Coolie could dampen excitement for upcoming LCU projects.
Many fans feel that if Kaithi 2 also fails to meet expectations, Lokesh Kanagaraj may lose a major part of his fan base. However, others are hopeful that he will bounce back strongly and reclaim his stature as a top Kollywood filmmaker.
For now, all eyes are on Kaithi 2, where Lokesh Kanagaraj has the chance to silence critics and prove his storytelling strength once again.
