The Indian 2 movie, which was released yesterday, was a sequel to the cult classic Indian. Starting from Billa 2 till the recently released Indian 2, sequels were the biggest villains for stars in Kollywood.
In many cases, Tamil movie Sequels didn’t even have the story continuity or the necessity for the sequel, but Sequels and Prequels were made because of the blockbuster success of the OG movie and also the impact that was created by the Midquel movies.
The Big Actors sequels, starting with Ajith Kumar’s Billa 2, Vikram’s Saamy 2, Dhanush’s Velai Illa Pattadhari 2, and many others, including the recently released Indian 2, were the biggest disasters and also became defamatory for the iconic characters of the actors in their OG movies.
In this scenario, some sequels, such as Raghava Lawrence’s Kanchana 2 and Kanchana 3, Venkat Prabhu’s Chennai 28 2, and Karthik Subbaraj’s Jigarthanda 2, became hits and became the odd ones out of Kollywood’s sequel failures.
However, mature audiences were feeling that there wasn’t any need for a sequel if it didn’t need Part 2, like the movies such as Ponniyin Selvan, which were meant to be taken as two-part movies. Because of the length and also because of the story, it cannot be packed into a single-part movie. There are many sequels lined up for release in the coming years, such as Vetri Maaran’s Viduthalai Part-2, Kamal Haasan’s Indian-3, Arul Nidhi’s Demonte Colony-2, Karthi’s Sardar-2, and many others. Let’s see if these movies become hits and break the streak of sequel failures in Kollywood.
