Did Coolie Really Deserve Adults Only Certificate?

Rajinikanth’s much-awaited film Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, finally hit theatres yesterday and has been receiving mixed reviews from audiences. Many moviegoers are now questioning its A certificate, saying the film lacks gruesome murders or bloody action scenes and that the rating feels unnecessary.

Kollywood trackers on social media have suggested that the CBFC might have issued the A certificate because of the multiple cremation scenes involving dead bodies shown in the film. Some others believe the rating could be linked to the portrayal of the harbour as an illegal hub in the storyline.

Critics argue that this reasoning seems unfair, as several past films featuring ports or airports as illegal hubs were given a U/A certificate. Many industry experts therefore believe the cremation sequences are the main reason for the stricter rating.

While Coolie does not feature extreme violence, the A certificate may discourage family audiences from visiting theatres. It remains to be seen if this rating will have any effect on the movie’s box office performance in the coming days.
