Tech giant Intel has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with eight Indian Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) companies and Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) to accelerate the production of laptops under the Make in India initiative. This move is a significant stride towards building a robust electronics manufacturing ecosystem in India.
The companies Intel has partnered with include Bhagwati Products Ltd, Dixon Technologies India Ltd, Kaynes Technology India Ltd, Optiemus Electronics Ltd, Panache Digilife Ltd, Smile Electronics Ltd, Syrma SGS Technology Ltd, and VVDN Technologies Private Ltd. Notably, this collaboration marks the entry of some of these companies into laptop manufacturing, indicating a promising step forward for the Indian electronics industry.
Intel’s involvement in this initiative goes beyond mere collaboration. The tech giant has shared its expertise to facilitate the production of complete entry-level laptops within India. This support encompasses utilizing state-of-the-art Surface Mount Technology (SMT) lines, establishing a rigorous quality control process for components, and even benchmarking finished products. By enabling the entire manufacturing process, from assembly to the final product, Intel aims to meet the demands of the Make in India initiative while contributing significantly to the nation’s technological progress.
Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, lauded Intel for its efforts in aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to drive India’s Digital Economy to $1 trillion. He emphasized the importance of such partnerships in enabling the electronics manufacturing ecosystem to contribute $300 billion by 2025-26.
Santhosh Viswanathan, VP & MD, India Region, Intel, expressed his enthusiasm about fueling electronic manufacturing capabilities in India. He stated, “Intel has been the fundamental enabler of electronic ecosystems worldwide, and we are excited about fostering the same in India. Bringing in Intel’s technology-related investments and global system supply chain ecosystem knowledge exemplifies our dedication to the growth of electronic manufacturing in India.”
This collaboration comes in the wake of the Indian government’s initiatives, including the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme 2.0 for IT hardware. The scheme, with a budget of ₹17,000 crore, aims to stimulate local manufacturing and is expected to create ₹4.7 lakh crore in incremental production over a six-year period.
Additionally, Intel is gearing up to host the India Tech Ecosystem Summit in November, where it will showcase a portfolio of devices made in India. Such initiatives not only strengthen India’s position in the global electronics market but also align with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a $1 trillion digital economy.
Intel’s collaboration with Indian manufacturers signifies a pivotal moment for the country’s electronics industry, fostering innovation, creating employment opportunities, and propelling India closer to becoming a global hub for electronics manufacturing.
