Following the tragic plane crash near Ahmedabad on June 12, a leading Indian TV news channel aired AI-generated visuals in an attempt to recreate how the crash may have occurred.
The tragedy claimed 241 lives—including that of former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani along with four medical professionals who died after the plane crashed into the hostel of a government-run medical college.
What was intended as a visual explanation quickly turned into a disturbing dramatization. The AI-rendered video, which included imagined scenes of late CM Rupani’s final moments, was seen by many as an attempt to turn national tragedy into a spectacle for ratings and viewership.
The animation quickly drew backlash, with social media condemning the content as insensitive, exploitative, and deeply disrespectful to the victims and their families.
“These channels should be banned,” wrote one user, echoing the sentiments of thousands who were appalled by the lack of empathy in such coverage.
It would’ve been surprising if this was an isolated incident, but the Indian news media has a track record of desensitizing their audience by running AI-driven reconstructions, flashy graphics, and fictionalized storytelling.
The backlash has many demanding the news channel take accountability and apologize for their insensitivity to the families of the victims.
The incident has also raised demands for stricter regulation of AI use in newsrooms as a reminder that ethics must not be compromised for entertainment.
