IndiGo Scam? Extra Charge for Legal Baggage

IndiGo Faces Backlash Over Baggage Overcharge

A recent incident involving IndiGo Airlines has stirred widespread concern among travelers. A passenger flying from Goa to Chandigarh on flight 6E724 reported three different weight readings for the same bag at various IndiGo-operated conveyor belts. The discrepancies were notable—18 kg on one, 16 kg on another, and 15 kg on the third.

When the passenger raised the issue, the IndiGo staff insisted on accepting the highest weight as accurate. This led to a staggering excess baggage charge of ₹11,900, including ₹1,500 just for an umbrella. The airline’s refusal to address the inconsistency raised serious doubts about the reliability of its baggage scales.

Are IndiGo’s Airport Scales Rigged?

Upon reaching his hotel, the passenger reweighed the bag, which came in at exactly 15 kg. This casts doubt on the accuracy of the airport scales and suggests either malfunction or intentional miscalibration. Such discrepancies could lead to passengers paying unjustified fees for baggage that technically falls within the permissible limit.

For budget-conscious flyers, these sudden charges can be financially overwhelming. While most airlines are known for hidden fees, the inconsistencies in weighing systems push the issue into the territory of potential exploitation. Many believe that this could be more than just technical error.

Time for Transparency and Action

IndiGo must conduct an urgent audit of its baggage weighing systems across airports. A full refund should be issued to passengers who were wrongly charged due to these discrepancies. In an industry built on trust, fairness in customer service should be the bare minimum—not an exception.
