Joby Aviation has achieved a breakthrough in aviation by completing the first piloted electric vertical takeoff and landing air taxi flight between two public airports in the United States. This marks a turning point in efforts to make air taxis part of everyday travel.
Historic flight between airports
The flight took place in California, connecting Marina Municipal Airport with Monterey Regional Airport. The trip lasted about twelve minutes, covering roughly ten nautical miles. It also included a holding pattern to ensure safe spacing with other aircraft approaching Monterey.
Integrated into controlled airspace
What makes this test notable is that the operation was not a closed demonstration. Instead, it was fully integrated into the Federal Aviation Administration’s controlled airspace. This proved that eVTOL aircraft can operate alongside traditional airplanes in real-world traffic conditions.
Safe and smooth operations
The aircraft executed a vertical takeoff, transitioned smoothly into wingborne flight, and landed vertically, following procedures similar to regular airline traffic. This success shows that electric air taxis can function safely within existing air travel systems, an essential step for future urban air mobility.
Insights for certification process
Joby has already logged over 40,000 miles of testing across its fleet. However, this flight provided new data on how pilots communicate with air traffic control at busy airports. These insights will help improve operations and support the FAA certification process.
Preparing for commercial rollout
The successful test comes as Joby accelerates its commercial plans. The company aims to begin passenger services in cities like Los Angeles and New York once approvals are secured. To strengthen its presence, Joby has also announced plans to acquire Blade Air Mobility’s passenger division.
Step toward everyday air travel
By linking two airports under real operating conditions, Joby has moved closer to making electric air taxis a practical option for commuters and travellers. This milestone flight signals a new era in aviation where sustainable and efficient air transport could become a daily reality.
