Bag Check Triggers Brutal Attack on SpiceJet Agent

A violent incident at Srinagar airport on July 26 left four SpiceJet employees injured and sparked nationwide outrage over the safety of airline staff. The attack occurred when Ritesh Kumar Singh, a serving army officer, reportedly became violent after being asked to adhere to SpiceJet’s cabin baggage rules. What followed was a brutal assault that seriously injured one staff member, leaving him bedridden with spinal fractures.

According to reports, the officer was carrying 16 kilograms of hand luggage—well over the airline’s 7-kilogram limit. When the staffer politely explained the policy, the officer responded by throwing his trolley bag and physically attacking the employee. The staff member collapsed, bleeding, and was denied help as the officer reportedly stood over him and continued his aggression. The victim is now immobile and requires constant assistance for even basic needs.

This was not a case of flight delays or customer service complaints. It was a violent reaction to a standard operational rule that applies to all passengers. Enforcing baggage limits is part of an airline’s safety and logistics protocol. That such a routine act of duty resulted in a severe physical assault is not just shocking—it’s a grim reminder of the rising hostility airline workers face.

The incident did not end with just one victim. The officer allegedly attacked three more employees, even using a queue stand as a weapon. Shocking video footage of the assault has circulated online, showing the intensity of the attack before CISF personnel intervened. SpiceJet has since filed a police complaint and is urging authorities to take strict action, including putting the accused on a no-fly list.

Airline staff work under demanding conditions, managing delays, difficult passengers, and operational pressures. They deserve dignity, not danger. This assault cannot be dismissed as a one-off incident. It calls for swift justice and firm measures to ensure aviation workers are protected from future acts of violence.
