A United Airlines Boeing 737 MAX made an emergency landing in Salt Lake City on October 16, 2025, after colliding midair with a weather balloon. Investigators confirmed that the 737 MAX’s multi-layer laminated windshield design prevented decompression, avoiding a potentially serious accident. Passengers described the descent as “tense but well-handled,” with cabin crew suspending service after a cockpit announcement.

WindBorne Introduces New Safety Measures

WindBorne stated it has launched over 4,000 weather balloons globally and that this was the first known collision involving its equipment. The company has since implemented altitude restrictions to keep its devices below commercial flight levels and is working on systems that integrate live aircraft tracking data. If confirmed by the NTSB, this would mark the first recorded weather balloon strike on a passenger jet in U.S. aviation history.
