Change of Status F1 To B2: Timeline And Risks

The last few months of STEM OPT often feel like a race against time for Indian students in the US. With the visa nearing its end and no H1B application in place, staying back legally becomes complicated.

Then comes something unexpected. A close friend’s wedding, scheduled for months after OPT ends. Attending suddenly becomes difficult, even if it’s just for a few days.

Applying for a tourist visa (B2) from India is not quick. In most cities, appointment wait times stretch to 8 or 9 months. So even if someone leaves the US right after OPT ends, the visa might not arrive in time for the event.

That leaves one option. Applying for a change of status from F1 to B2 while still in the US. This means filing paperwork with USCIS before the current visa runs out.

But this is not a quick fix either. The process can take 6 to 12 months or more. And once the application is submitted, the person cannot leave the country until a decision is made.

Even if the request is approved, it does not come with a visa stamp. So if the person wants to leave and return for the wedding, they would still need to apply for a B2 visa abroad and face the same long wait.

This creates a frustrating gap. The timelines do not match. The process to legally stay takes longer than the event itself, and getting a tourist visa from outside the US just is not fast enough.

The bigger issue here is how rigid and slow the system is. It does not consider genuine reasons like weddings, family events, or emotional goodbyes. It treats everything like a technical request, not a human one.

Even people who follow every rule end up stuck. The rules work on paper, but life does not.

This is not about staying longer than allowed. It is about how the system does not bend, even when all someone wants is to show up for an important moment and then go home.
