F-1 Crackdown: OPT Students to Face New Hurdle?

In a strange incident, an F-1 student who applied for OPT (Optional Practical Training) with premium processing was hit with an unexpected biometrics appointment, something that’s never been standard. The student took to social media, claiming he had no criminal history or immigration violations, making this request even more absurd.

While some brushed it off as a glitch, in today’s climate, it may be something more deliberate. The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has quietly been ramping up background checks, delays, and document demands, particularly targeting immigrants.

Recently, several immigration attorneys flagged similar concerns, where even H-1B workers and H4 spouses were randomly being called for biometrics. It’s becoming clear that the Trump administration isn’t holding back in making life tougher for immigrants and the OPT work permit might just be their next target.

For the over 330,000 Indian students hoping to build a future in the US, this is yet another obstacle. Even premium processing is no longer a guarantee for quick or smooth approval.

Some attorneys have advised that there is no need to respond to such biometrics notices unless USCIS provides a proper explanation. But with the current crackdown, Indian students and workers would be wise to have a trusted lawyer they can consult when things take a sudden turn.
