F-1 Visa Crisis: Indian Students Hit Record Low

The US visa crisis has shaken Indian students as F-1 approvals hit a historic low. Data shows a 14.7% drop in approvals in the first half of FY2025 compared to FY2024. India’s share fell the most, plunging nearly 43%.

Sharp Decline in Student Visas

August recorded a 19% year-on-year fall in student visas, with Indian applicants down by 45%. China faced the second-biggest dip at 24%. The trend is alarming, given that the first half of the fiscal year usually sees fewer applications.

Policy Shifts Behind the Crisis

The decline stems from Trump era visa policies and a stricter immigration stance. Many students face endless interview delays, revoked visas over minor infractions, or sudden cancellations of consulate appointments, leaving dreams of studying in the US in jeopardy.

Social Media Vetting Adds Fear

In June, new rules introduced social media vetting for all student visas. Officers demanded online account details, placing almost every applicant under administrative checks. This created long delays, discouraging future aspirants and deepening uncertainty.

Interview Slots in Short Supply

Indian students have been hit hardest by the lack of interview slots. Many reported that no dates were available online, while the few that opened up were instantly booked by millions. For many, scholarships and admissions were wasted opportunities.

Fallout for Universities and Students

The crisis extends beyond students. US universities face financial losses as departments dependent on Indian enrolment scramble to fill seats. While lawsuits and protests continue, students are already exploring alternatives in Canada, the UK, and Germany.
