Decade-Old F-1, H-1B Visas Block US Global Entry

A Canadian citizen and frequent U.S. traveller has shared his frustration after repeatedly being sent to secondary inspection despite holding a Global Entry pass. He suspects his old F-1 and H-1B visa records are causing the problem.

Old student record raises red flags

The traveller said he studied in the U.S. over a decade ago under an F-1 visa, later worked under OPT, TN, and H-1B, and eventually moved abroad. However, even with Nexus which should guarantee quick entry he’s flagged for extra screening on nearly half his trips.

Delays despite trusted traveller status

According to him, border officers bring up his old student record each time before escorting him to a waiting area for questioning. The process lasts around 15 minutes, but he says it defeats the purpose of a fast-track program like Nexus or Global Entry.

University confirms record closure

The traveller contacted his former university, which verified that his SEVIS record was properly completed and closed. Still, outdated data in the U.S. border system seems to keep triggering additional checks.

Bureaucratic mess beyond departure

One officer even emailed him with possible solutions but admitted it might not change much. His case reflects a larger issue how legacy visa records can continue causing complications long after someone has left the U.S. immigration system.

For many former students, it seems leaving the country doesn’t always mean leaving its bureaucracy behind.
