Bizarre F-1 Visa Rejection: 2 Questions, Biased Officer?

A recent F-1 visa rejection at the Mumbai consulate has created fresh concern among Indian students planning to study in the United States. The applicant claimed the interview lasted only a few minutes and involved just two questions before the visa was rejected.

According to the student, they were selected for an MSCS programme at the University of Florida for Fall 2026. The visa interview reportedly took place on May 22. The officer first collected the passport and I-20 form before beginning the interaction.

The applicant said the officer asked about the universities they had applied to and briefly discussed the father’s business role. After typing on the computer for nearly a minute, the officer allegedly declared the applicant “ineligible” and handed over a rejection slip.

What surprised the student most was the speed of the interview process. The applicant claimed there were no questions about the university, course selection, future career plans, or reasons for choosing the United States for higher studies.

The student also stated that several applicants before them were allegedly rejected as well. This reportedly created a tense atmosphere inside the Mumbai consulate. Many students waiting for interviews appeared nervous and uncertain.

Several Indian students have recently shared similar experiences regarding short F-1 visa interviews. Many applicants believe visa officers decide outcomes mainly through DS-160 forms before the actual interview begins. This perception has increased concerns over stricter scrutiny.

Under US immigration rules, visa officers can reject applications if they are not convinced about temporary visa eligibility. However, students who spend months preparing documents and waiting for appointments often find such brief interviews disappointing and stressful.
