Lawmakers Want H-1B Renewals Without Flights

H-1B visa holders in the U.S. still have an odd issue—traveling overseas simply to renew their visas. Despite working and living lawfully, the system forces many to travel overseas and wait months for appointments.

In 2024, a small pilot program allowed some H-1B workers to renew their visas in the U.S. It worked well, saved time, and gave people a break from the normal stress.

Now, a bipartisan group of legislators desires that option expanded and enshrined in law. They’ve written to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, urging him to add other visa categories like L, O, and E, and make the guidelines clear.

Their case is simple—the current system is antiquated. Lengthy waits at American consulates overseas, compounded by the pandemic, still exist in 2025, with more than 300-day waits in some areas.

Technology is no longer a barrier. Biometrics can be verified securely, and low-risk applicants could be processed easily at home without undermining national security.

Making domestic visa renewal permanent would ease the burden on thousands of Indian professionals. It would reduce backlogs, help U.S. companies retain talent, and give families greater stability.
