NRI Struggles Resolved: Make Your Own Policies!

Non-resident Indians (NRIs) and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) have a significant contribution to Indian politics and economy but they have never had any representation in the government. Well, it is about time things change.

According to reports, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor led a parliamentary committee meeting on Tuesday to discuss the lack of representation for NRIs. Fellow MPs joined in and gave the example of other countries like Italy which allows overseas citizens to be part of their parliament.

This has been long overdue as the NRI communities from Andhra, Kerala, Punjab, and other regions have been advocating for this change.

Their concerns range from immigration policies to the welfare of migrant workers, which only a member of the community can empathize with. More often than not, these issues go unaddressed in parliamentary sessions as they have had no voices in the government or opposition till now.

NRIs and OCIs are rapidly growing, leaving a mark everywhere in the world. Thus, support from their home country would give them a necessary boost to contribute more to India and be part of the legislative process.
