Still Chasing a Green Card After 30 Years?

Green card backlogs for Indians in the U.S. are becoming increasingly dire. Those applying under the EB-2 and EB-3 categories might find themselves waiting over 30 years for permanent residency—even after their applications are approved.

Currently, they’re still processing files from 2012. That’s more than a decade of individuals left in limbo, uncertain about their future.

This means that a highly skilled engineer, doctor, or tech professional in their 30s today could very well retire before ever receiving their green card. Yet, they continue to apply year after year.

Why do they keep trying? Because the U.S. still offers something that no other country can match—global exposure, exceptional opportunities, and a sense of freedom that’s hard to find elsewhere.

For many, just the thought of being part of that system is worth the gamble. It’s a chance to work with leading companies, provide better education for their children, and enjoy a more independent lifestyle.

But the reality is much tougher than it seems. The H-1B visa system only allows 60 days to secure a new sponsor if someone loses their job, and there’s no guarantee that anyone will step up to help.

This isn’t merely about chasing after money. It’s about the desire to build a life in a place that often feels just out of reach—despite years of hard work, paying taxes, and doing everything by the book.

The bigger question is—how long can someone keep waiting without any clear answers? As families back home age, healthcare costs rise, and children start school, there’s little room left for uncertainty.

Yet, the decision to stay isn’t just a logical one. It’s deeply emotional. It’s about belonging to a system that may never fully embrace you, but still holds a powerful allure.

In a world filled with choices, this one still has a unique draw. Not because it’s easy—but because it feels like the only option truly worth pursuing.
