Current trends suggest that the numbers will continue to climb, with the government projecting higher visa issuance for students in 2023 compared to the previous year. As of the beginning of August, over 393,000 F-1 visas have already been issued in the current fiscal year.
However, alongside the rise in issued visas, there has also been an increase in the denial rate. The data shows a denial rate of 34.9% for the 2022 financial year, considerably higher than the 19.8% rate observed in the preceding year.
India, a key source of international students for the US, has experienced improvements in the visa application process. A new US consulate in Hyderabad has mitigated the need for students to travel extensively for visa appointments, and the resulting decrease in demand has led to a reduction in charges for black market visa booking services.
Despite the positive developments, those who faced rejections encountered prolonged waiting periods for reappointments. Although second appointment dates have been announced, some students might find these dates too late to secure visas in time for the fall intake, potentially leading them to consider educational alternatives in other countries.
The data underscores a significant preference for US education among Asian students, particularly Indians, who accounted for a major portion of the F-1 visas granted in 2022, with 115,115 visas issued to Indian students alone, out of almost 70% of total visas issued to Asian students.
