Trump Impact: Visa Weddings On Hold

Donald Trump is less than a year into his second term, but his new policies are already troubling Indians. Tariffs, stricter H1B rules, and immigration orders are affecting not only jobs and loans but also marriage prospects.

Green cards and H1B visas earlier boosted groom value in alliances, as families preferred matches that offered a chance to settle in the United States. But in recent months, many of these alliances have suddenly stopped taking place.

In January, the Trump administration attempted an executive order limiting birthright citizenship to children of U.S. citizens or permanent residents from February 19, 2025. Though courts have temporarily blocked it, the uncertainty has unsettled NRI marriages.

Adding to this, AI disruption has hit the IT industry hard, while rumours of a ban on outsourcing fuel parental concerns. Many families now prefer grooms with stable jobs in India, especially outside the IT sector.

The proposed $100K H1B fee has worsened the situation. Weddings fixed earlier are now stuck, as grooms expected to travel abroad face delays. Parents are left confused, some alliances risk cancellation, and heartbreak looms large.

At present, the order affects those outside the U.S., but H1B holders could face similar issues at visa expiry. With the future uncertain, many hope the courts will step in again to block such policies.
