Wet Passport Ruins F1 Visa, Student Trapped in US?

A minor accident has created a major problem for an Indian F-1 student in the US. Sharing the experience on Reddit, the student said their passport got wet, causing some of the printed details on their visa stamp to smudge.

Smudged Visa Creates Travel Confusion

Although the visa appears fine to the naked eye, scanners fail to read it. This caused confusion when airline staff were unable to verify the visa during the student’s return journey from India, leading to concerns about its validity.

Legal Status vs. Travel Status

The student’s stay in the US remains valid since immigration records are stored electronically. However, a physical visa stamp is required for re-entry. If scanners or border officers can’t confirm the details, the visa can be considered invalid for travel.

No Replacement Option in the US

Once inside the country, there’s no option to reissue or “reprint” a visa. The only solution is to travel back to India and apply for a fresh stamp. Since interview waivers are currently suspended, the student will have to book a new consulate appointment.

Delays and Graduation Concerns

Given the long wait times for visa interviews, the process could take months. The student graduates in two months, and their F-1 visa will extend into the Optional Practical Training (OPT) phase. Until then, the safest option is to avoid international travel.

Strict Travel Rules Remain

US immigration policy is clear: a valid visa stamp is mandatory for re-entry, and visa holders are responsible for maintaining their documents. The student now hopes that when they eventually apply for a new visa, it won’t affect their OPT status or job prospects.
