Amazon Prime’s Big Bet Beyond Movies: Will It Work?

Amazon adds always-on news hub to Prime Video US rollout plan. Amazon has started rolling out a major update to Prime Video in the United States by adding a dedicated, always on news destination at no extra cost. The feature brings live national, local, and global news directly into the Prime Video interface.

The new service allows users to switch easily between entertainment and real time news within the same app. It is funded through advertising and offers a mix of FAST news streams along with established television news brands. This signals Amazon’s plan to expand Prime Video beyond films and series.

By placing news on the home screen, Amazon aims to increase viewing time and position Prime Video as a daily use platform. For US users, the key benefit is convenience, as live news no longer requires a separate app or cable subscription.

A similar move in India would need careful adaptation. India’s news ecosystem is highly fragmented, multilingual, and politically sensitive. Any Prime Video news hub in India would need strong regional representation across Hindi, English, and major regional languages.

Transparency would also be critical. Clear labelling of ad supported news streams and separation between editorial content and recommendations would help build trust. While the model could add value to Prime membership in India, poor execution could invite criticism. Success would depend on balance, credibility, and regional relevance.
