The term ‘direct-to-OTT release’ became most familiar to Telugu and Indian audiences during the COVID times, with OTT streamer Amazon Prime Video acquiring South films left and right and directly releasing them on their platform.
Now, with theatrical business back on its feet worldwide, we rarely hear the term ‘direct-to-OTT release.
However, a popular Hollywood director who has delivered films like ‘The Bourne Identity’ announced his protest against Amazon Prime for planning to release his film directly on Prime, skipping its theatrical release.
The film, titled ‘Roadhouse,’ featuring popular actor ‘Jake Gyllenhaal,’ will directly stream on Amazon Prime Video.
This has upset the film’s director, Doug Liman, terribly. He stated that he is begging Amazon to release his film simultaneously in theaters, just like they recently did with Ben Affleck’s movie ‘Air.’
It is strange to see a known director like Doug Liman begging a streamer to release his film in theaters, despite having a lead cast like Jake Gyllenhaal.
