Terrible First Look: God of War Creator Slams OTT Series

The first look of Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming adaptation of God of War has triggered sharp reactions online. The poster shows Kratos, played by Ryan Hurst, standing in a forest with his son Atreus, portrayed by Callum Vinson. Fans quickly began debating the visual tone.

Franchise creator David Jaffe openly criticised the image. Speaking on YouTube, he called the poster “bad in so many ways.” He said it failed to capture the powerful presence that defined Kratos in the original games.

Jaffe specifically questioned Kratos’ stance and expression in the poster. According to him, the image lacked the mythic intensity associated with the character. However, he clarified that he respects showrunner Ron Moore and believes the series could still work.

Among fans, reactions have been mixed. Some feel the first look does not reflect the epic scale of the franchise. A section of viewers even compared it to cosplay rather than a big budget reinvention.

At the same time, others argue that judging a series based on one still image may be premature. Promotional posters rarely reveal the full visual ambition of a show. Elements like background score, action choreography and performances often change perception.

Still, expectations are high for a property as iconic as God of War. First impressions carry weight, especially for major adaptations. Whether the final series meets those expectations remains to be seen.
