Monkey Man, which was previously scheduled to be shown on Netflix, has switched distributors and will now be released by Universal Pictures with a full theatrical run. It was initially featured in Netflix’s 2022 slate announcement, however as the year progressed, the film was removed from the schedule.
When the 2023 film lineup was announced, Monkey Man was noticeably absent. This was also the situation with Halle Berry’s The Mothership, which we’ve learned has been completely canceled. Netflix purchased the film in 2021 for an estimated $30 million. It was filmed during four months from December 2020 to February 2021.
In the India-set picture, Patel portrays a strange hero who emerges from jail to confront a society steeped in corporate greed and deteriorating spiritual values, seeking vengeance on those who stole anything from him many years ago. The script was written by Patel, Paul Angunawela (“Keith Lemon: The Film”), and John Collee, who co-wrote “Hotel Mumbai,” which also featured Patel.
Fast forward to today, and Universal Pictures recently announced that it will be the home of the feature picture, which has already concluded production and is set to hit theatres on April 5th, 2024, under Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions label. Dev Patel directs and appears in the action thriller, which has been compared to John Wick, alongside Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, and Sikander Kher.
