Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2 has taken the box office by surprise. The film, which was released yesterday, received a good response at the box office. The film has collected Rs. 21 crores nett in India. According to early trade estimates, this gives the film a much bigger start than expected.
Surprisingly Awarapan 2 has moved past the original. The 2007 Awarapan had a lifetime nett collection of around ₹7.7 crore, that means the sequel has crossed the entire theatrical run of Awarapan in just one day.
The opening is particularly interesting considering that Awarapan was not a box-office success when it released. Over the years, however, the film developed a strong cult following, and that nostalgia appears to have played a major role in bringing audiences back for the sequel.
Awarapan 2 also marks the biggest-ever opener for Emraan Hashmi as a solo lead. A ₹21 crore Day 1 is already a huge win for Emraan Hashmi, but the real question is whether the film can maintain this momentum through the weekend.
