Bollywood’s 2025 box office performance has made one thing clear. Comedy sequels are no longer guaranteed successes. Several big franchises returned this year, yet audience response remained muted and collections failed to match expectations.
Films like De De Pyaar De 2, Son Of Sardaar 2, Mastiii 4 and Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 arrived with familiar characters and recognised stars. Nostalgia played a key role in promotions, but it did not translate into sustained footfalls.
Among the four, De De Pyaar De 2 performed relatively better with around Rs 70 crore net. Even then, the figure was seen as underwhelming considering Ajay Devgn’s popularity and the film’s scale. Poor word-of-mouth led to a steep drop after the opening weekend.
Son Of Sardaar 2 also struggled to recreate the charm of its predecessor. Ajay Devgn’s return as Jassi after more than a decade failed to excite viewers. The film earned just over Rs 43 crore and was ultimately labelled a flop.
Mastiii 4 and Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 fared even worse at the box office. Both films wrapped up their theatrical runs with collections of barely Rs 10 to 12 crore, marking them as clear disasters.
A major issue across all these releases was outdated humour and repetitive storytelling. Audiences today expect freshness even from familiar franchises. Trade analysts believe comedy still has potential, but only if supported by sharper writing and contemporary ideas.
